Western Colorado Ecology Immersion: Mid-Elevation Piñon Juniper Ecology Study, Week 2

I’m hosting a mid-elevation Piñon Juniper ecology & plants immersion camp in collaboration with the nonprofit Groundwork at a location in the Grand Mesa National Forest near Grand Junction, Colorado.

This session is a 7 day class where we will car camp together in the backcountry at a basecamp, with meals provided. From there, we will learn together and take field trips out from that location during the week.

(Week 1 and Week 2 of the mid-elevation Piñon Juniper camp will be similar curriculum)

We will explore:

expanded topics in critical ethnobotany in modern times

current narratives around Piñon Juniper habitat across the west

desert and Rocky Mountain ecology regionally and in the greater west

plant ID and basic botany skills

wild foods, medicine and craft plants at mid-elevation in the southern Rockies

wild-tending for ecological and cultural health at mid-elevation in the southern Rockies

some land based crafts integrating plants at this elevation

some field trips from basecamp to explore other mid-elevation areas together

some spacious time to journal, read and write together to integrate our experience of this landscape

and more.
