Beebalm Oxymel
Beebalm Oxymel
Oxymel made with Monarda fistulosa during the height of the summer season, otherwise known as Beebalm or Wild Bergamot.
An Oxymel is typically a medicine made with Apple Cider Vinegar and honey, and is alcohol free.
Beebalm or Monarda is a prairie plant that is found from the east coasts through the Appalachian mountains, thew Ozarks, the Great Plains and upper midwest, the Rockies, western deserts and deeper southwest. There are different subspecies of the plant that exist as well as relatives in the same genus found scattered across the continent.
Monarda is a special plant that is easy to grow, and is often associated with anthropogenic gardens, tended landscapes, because of its known powerful medicine.
It is associated with medicine for bee stings and other bites and stings as an anti-inflammatory and is known to help draw out poison if chewed up and placed on the wound- much in the way Plantain is used among folk medicine first aid. Obviously in serious instances, or where allergic reaction is taking place - seek immediate help.
Monarda has been used topically infused in vinegar on rashes and sunburn. It has been used internally as a nervine, anti-inflammatory medicine, as a firey mover of stagnancy, sickness or heart guarding.
Its a great medicine to take before a big interview, or to stimulate digestive fire. It has been known to aid in reducing congestion, fever and harsh coughs. I often use the leaves as a spice in cooking food.
