I dug this California Spikenard with my friend Ellen from an abundant stand in drizzly rain and light snow last March, with pickaxe in tow, to brew into mead, infuse in honey and tincture for a years supply, in rural Trinity county, California. The Elderberries came from Nevada county, California and just outside the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho.

Use this elixir as a lung tonic during times of the year that the lungs are sensitive to dampness or as an acute remedy for lung congestion. The Elderberry medicine contained in this formula is known to be a strong immune-booster. The combination together can aid in keeping the lungs strong and vibrant.

Spikenard is related to Devil’s Club (Oplopanax horridus) which is found in the Pacific Northwest, and American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) which is found in Appalachia and the foothills of the Southeast.

Like Ginseng, California Spikenard is listed on the United Plant Savers “To Watch” list. What I harvested for this batch came from a half of a single plant rootstock with the rest of the plant left to thrive. I believe that responsible harvesting or tending of sensitive plants can actually increase their abundance when done correctly.
